Fleece vs. Terry Fabric: What’s the Real Difference?

What is Fleece Fabric?
Fleece is a soft, thick knit material designed specifically for maximum warmth. To create it, manufacturers take a knit fabric and heavily brush the inner side. This process breaks and frays the tiny yarn loops, turning them into a plush, fuzzy surface that mimics the insulating properties of wool.
  • The Texture: Smooth and flat on the outside, but incredibly soft and fuzzy on the inside.
  • The Weight: Typically heavier, ranging anywhere from 280 to over 400 GSM (grams per square meter).
  • How it Works: The fuzzy fibers create thousands of tiny air pockets. These pockets trap your natural body heat, acting as a shield against the cold.
What is Terry (French Terry) Fabric?
Terry cloth—specifically French terry when used for clothing—is a versatile knit fabric that leaves the inner yarn loops intact. Instead of being brushed into a fuzz, the back of the fabric features neat, uniform rows of uncut loops.
  • The Texture: Clean and smooth on the face, with a textured, looped, or "pebbled" feel on the inside.
  • The Weight: Mid-to-lightweight, usually sitting between 200 and 350 GSM.
  • How it Works: The uncut loops create a larger surface area on the inside of the garment. This allows the fabric to absorb moisture quickly and pull it away from your skin.

Which Fabric is Right for You?
Choose Fleece If:
  • You live in a cold climate. If you need a reliable winter hoodie or heavy sweatpants to battle freezing temperatures, fleece is the undisputed champion.
  • You prioritize ultimate coziness. The brushed texture feels like a warm blanket against the skin, making it perfect for lounging on chilly nights.
  • You want structure. Heavy fleece holds its shape well, giving garments a boxier, premium look.
Choose Terry If:
  • You want year-round versatility. Terry is a great transitional fabric. It keeps you comfortable on a brisk spring morning but won't cause you to overheat when the sun comes out.
  • You are active. If you plan on wearing the garment to the gym, for a run, or during physical daily errands, terry’s breathability and moisture-wicking loops will keep you dry.
  • You prefer easy layering. Because it is thinner and less bulky than fleece, a terry sweatshirt sits comfortably under denim jackets or heavy coats without restricting your movement.
